I just found a link (from J-Walk) of the top 100 first lines from novels.
Neither, “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit) nor, “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” (Stephen King, The Gunslinger) made it, despite the fact that they’re both better than a lot of the lines in that list. In fact, I dare say that at least one of them should be #1 (but picking between the two is a task I find impossible).
Regardless, this reminds me that I really need to read more and better books.

The hobo links below are fixed.
I think.

Surprisingly, this particular topic has come up more than once during lunch at work. I read an article about it on my laptop before some class (in the basement of Jordan, G033, but I don’t remember the class) in college and couldn’t keep myself from laughing.
I found the original link (from Fark), but it’s very dead. This is a reposting of it in a forum and it matches what I remember from the article (a real one on a real news site!).
The King of the Hobos
And the link to the Fark comments: It’s Not News.

Sitting here, at my computer, I thought I heard rain outside. I often imagine hearing rain, though. So I say to myself (out loud, because I’m just a little bit crazy), “Is it raining?”
At this point, most people would probably go look out the window. Not me.
weather.com all the way.

I want to go to someone’s house, knock on the front door, and say, “I saw on Google Earth that you have a pool. Mind if I use it?”
Note: The effect will be better if I’m wearing swimming flipper thingies and a snorkel.

Let it be noted: PJ brought only a satchel to stay at my apartment and not the usual five bags and an air bed.

I got my first e-mail newsletter from my new web host this morning.
The entire thing was a parody of the Lazy Sunday rap from SNL which has been hitting the Internet like storm.:
You may get a warning.
Step on it sucka!

Drinking sweet tea out of a wine glass amuses me greatly.
In fact, everything is cooler if poured into a wine glass. Weird.

My phone’s working this morning. I’m happy about that. (At the same time, I was really looking forward to getting a new phone…oh well!)
Still, I know water (nasty chicken water from the kitchen sink, in fact!) got behind the screen. Even though it’s working now, I’m not going to put any money on it’s working for much longer. I believe that it will start to corrode rather rapidly. I could be wrong though.
Anyway, I’m glad Cingular was closed yesterday and I didn’t end up dropping $100+ (which I don’t really have) on a phone (which I didn’t really need). I really need to learn to not make such rash decisions. I just can’t figure out how to stop it.

I drowned my phone today. :*-( I’m too clumsy to own electronics! (I can tell you that the iPod will be living its life far, far, far from the kitchen sink).
And both Cingular places that I know how to find are closed today. So I can’t even get a replacement.
Fortunately, my parents came to visit me today. My dad lent me his phone for emergency use. Naturally, he didn’t bring the charger with him. So I’ll have to go out tomorrow morning and drop some cash on a new phone. Bleh.
Not that I’m particularly happy about buying a new cellphone. This is just a crappy weekend all around.
I’m very, very, very tempted to just say “Screw it” and get a RAZR and a Bluetooth headset to go along with it. But I really don’t want to spend that kind of money. At the same time, those phones are so shiny…
I hope it’s not a sign of 2006-to-come. Because there’s still 364 days left to go.
