I just found a link (from J-Walk) of the top 100 first lines from novels.
Neither, “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit) nor, “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” (Stephen King, The Gunslinger) made it, despite the fact that they’re both better than a lot of the lines in that list. In fact, I dare say that at least one of them should be #1 (but picking between the two is a task I find impossible).
Regardless, this reminds me that I really need to read more and better books.

I thought it was funny in a bathroom in the Clemson library last year somebody had scrawled the Gunslinger quoteon the bathroom.
I’m all for vandalism and graffiti if it’s cool!
